I think, Blue, you have a point that the chat can be a distraction at times. However, no more than any other ativticy someone might involve themselves in while trading. Personally, I have missed trades due to typing or reading the chat. Similarly, I have missed trades while going for a walk, making or eating a meal, or doing any of the other things that take up part of my 10-13 hours per trading day. As for posting ideas I think there is a level of acceptance and encouragement for participation that the chat room strives for, but of which it often falls short. Unfortunately it appears that some traders have left the chat room after feeling either unworthy or, conversely, unappreciated. I'm unsure what tactics or strategies might be the useful for developing a more collaborative environment. I have benefited greatly from the many participants in the chat, exponentially more than anyone could have benefited from my random contributions.
